My dad had two 1991 Metros - one with a 5 speed manual and one with a 3 speed automatic. When the manual Metro got too rotten to be road legal, he had the (perfect-working) 3 cylinder engine taken out and put into the engine-less auto metro.With the 5 speed Metro, he got just over 50 MPG, but with the automatic Metro, he got only 38 MPG.

Don't forget that's pre-08 mileage, and with the auto it gets 26 31, which is not very good at all.
