Ya dope your forgeting there was no wildcard in the 80's and if there were a wildcard the Mets would have made the playoffs 7 years in a row from 1984 to 1990 where the Mets had the best record or the second best record in the N.L which would have made the Mets the wildcard team and who knows how many World Series titles they would have won in that stretch!!! So DUMMY the Mets were the CLASS of the N.L during that 7 year run! IF THERE ONLY WAS A WILDCARD!!!!!

Well, not to nit-pick here, but that is not true of the 1989 Mets. They would not have made the playoffs. Regardless, they won once with that cast of players. They made it to the Series ONCE with that cast of players. They won playoff series in ONE year with that cast of players. Sorry, but braggadoccio is the ONE thing that team truly did have. They'll go down as epic underachievers.

Well, you need to remember that had the current format been in action from 1984-1990, the Mets would have been in the playoffs every year and possibly may have won another world series.

That was Bob Murphy, radio commentator. I used to listen to him on the radio religiously for years with Gary Cohen!

tradition of excellence! HAHAHAHA lolololol !!!!!!!! A little too big for our britches as a franchise that won 1 world series with this cast of players....I mean the Marlins of 1997 and 2003 have a bigger winning legacy than the Mets of the 80's

yes, wilpon cashen and davey had to get to get it out as quick as possible for VHS revenue sales and have super positive bob murphy narrate it just in case God forbid the Dodgers were to do the impossible and outlast the favorites at the now torn down Shea Stadium and eventually head to the world series kind of like gold that eventually turns into lead

Did not make it to the series, but still a hell of a season. Mets seem to always just narrowly miss it. GO METS!

Never mind 1988 trivia accomplishments for Topps trading cards- 1000th hit and all-time leader in runs scored- Mookie Wilson was the true hero of 1986 World Series Game 6 that people ignore so they can turn Bill Buckner into a scapegoat for a turn back the clock ghost story and to auction off more merchandise. On 10/25/86 Mookie Wilson created both the World Series saving run and the winning run that put the Mets into the deciding game 7 the next day.

McReynolds was the first of this list of failed buy-a-stars. Samuel, Saberhagen, Viola, Coleman, Alomar, Herr, Piazza, and later even your new Mets Hero Orel Hershiser himself who shut them out in deciding game 7NLCS to go to the 1988 World Series.

Then of course there was Kevin McReynolds the Mets first buy-a-star, who came over in a trade for the guy who scored the run on the wild pitch on 10/25/86 that saved the Mets season. The Mets won that first game back in LA, and McReynolds one of the stars said that he wins either way whether the Mets beat Hershiser in deciding game 7 and goes back to World Series or McReynolds goes back to Arkansas.

Hey Murph, the Mets have been building a run for nearly a quarter of a century, haven't stood on top of the baseball world since 1986and 1988 no matter what this video says was certainly NOT a happy recap. When Mike Scoscia hit that home run off Gooden, shea Stadium was so quiet you could hear Hollywood from the Whitestone Bridge. Then When Kirk Gibson hit his game winning blast off Roger McDowell, the true hero of the 16 inning marathon in Houston 2 years earlier, you knew 1988 was NO 1986.

Mets beat them 11 out of 12 in the regular season that year. Mike Scocia had no business hitting that hr off of Doc in Game 4. If Davey did the right thing and put Myers in that situatiuon, Mets are probably world series champs that year.

The Dodgers in 1988 had no..I mean NO business beating that 1988 Mets team. But EVERY one of their hitters got hot at the same time. Mets would have SMOKED the A's, but that's baseball.
