I aggree, people seem to forget about heinsight when judging people of the distant past. perhaps they would have made the same decision in their shoes, infact most likely so.

Very true. As for the idea that columbus was a terrible man, one must always remember when examining important figures of the past that they are very much part of their historic context. Lincoln, for example, thought very poorly of blacks. It was firmly believed at the time that they were inferior. To examine Columbus outside of all historic context, it becomes very easy to judge him as a monster when he was no worse than many at the time, and better than most.

To find the distance between two cities, the Greeks would use geometry and astronomy. The Romans would send a legion to pace it out.

Actually, you're thinking of the Greeks. The romans were brilliant military men, but poor scholars. This is why the opened up greek schools all over their empire, where they employed greek teachers.

It is a powerful song, however regarding that other comment Colombus was a terrible man. First of all he wasn't the first to discover the Americas. The Americas were discovered by hunter gatherers who eventually settled down there. The vikings also discovered the Americas but because of their small numbers they couldn't build a lasting settlment. The next thing is that he is credited with being the first to know the Earth was round which the ancient Romans knew already thousands of years before.
